OUR PURPOSE

The ASEAN Law Institute seeks to promote ASEAN harmonization, regionalization, and dispute resolution.

Harmonization. The Institute will support ALA’s objective of promoting the harmonization of the laws of the ASEAN countries as required by the social and economic development of the ASEAN region.

Regionalization and Dispute Resolution. The Institute will also support ALA’s objective of developing ASEAN regional cooperation, including cooperation through ASEAN regional law and legal structures; as well as the objective of creating ASEAN mechanisms for the avoidance and resolution of legal disputes in transnational contracts within the ASEAN region.

These ALA objectives are consistent with ASEAN regional agreements that seek to harmonize national regulations, standards, and procedures, and those that have created mechanisms for the settlement of intra-ASEAN disputes.

Engagement and Collaboration. Additionally, the Institute will seek to develop a sustained, systematic, and long-term engagement between ALA and the ASEAN Secretariat, ASLOM, and other ASEAN entities. The Institute will also endeavor to harness the collaborative potential of ALA and its stakeholders in the ASEAN legal, business, and public sectors.
